Disinfection - Microbial Control

Disinfection is the process of eliminating all microorganisms, such as viruses, fungi, and bacteria, that may be present on a surface, using chemical means. The purpose of disinfecting a space is to reduce the microbial load in order to prevent cases of infections and contamination among the people who use these spaces.

Where Disinfection Is Carried Out

Disinfection is carried out in various environments, such as:

  1. Medical facilities: Hospitals, clinics, medical offices.
  2. Public spaces: Schools, gyms, public transport.
  3. Food industries: Production factories, restaurants, food stores.
  4. Residential spaces: Homes, especially during epidemic periods.
  5. Laboratories: Research centers, diagnostic laboratories.

Disinfection has significant benefits for public health and safety:

  1. Prevention of infections: It reduces the risk of transmission of infectious diseases.
  2. Protection of vulnerable groups: It protects people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, children, and patients.
  3. Food safety: It ensures hygiene and safety in the food production and distribution chain.
  4. Improvement of quality of life: It promotes a clean and safe living and working environment.
  5. Reduction of healthcare costs: It reduces the need for medical care and the costs associated with infections.

A misunderstanding... about the term

In our country, the phenomenon of incorrect use of words and terms is very often observed, resulting in saying one thing and meaning another. The same applies to disinfection. This happens because the vast majority of people consider that the term includes the entire range of pest control, rodent control, fumigation, and other pest control and treatment applications. Sometimes, instead of the term disinfection, the term “microbial control” is used, and this happens because reference is made to microbes and pathogenic microorganisms, but not to insects, rodents, such as mice, etc., or other harmful arthropods.
