Rodent control is the control of mice that invade a space, as well as the process and measures we take to prevent possible re-infestation. There are many species of rodents that create problems and that, aesthetically, you would not want to have near you.
The most commonly found in Greece are the black rat (Rattus rattus), the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the house mouse (Mus musculus).
The signs of a problem are the detection and finding of:
• droppings
• damaged materials
• damage to buildings
• shredded materials for nest building, such as cardboard, plastics, insulation materials, and others.
Mouse Control with “PROSTASIA PEST CONTROL SERVICES”
Once the problem has been identified, mouse control must be carried out immediately through the implementation of rodent control programs and by following a specific procedure. At “PROSTASIA PEST CONTROL SERVICES” we carry out an on-site inspection of the premises, identify the critical control points, and create a network of bait stations and capture traps. We provide advice on sealing the premises and carry out regular inspections, recording data which we process and use to take corrective measures for the complete elimination of the problem.
Bait Stations for Mouse Control
For the treatment and control of mice and rodents in outdoor areas, we use bait stations which contain rodenticidal products and the necessary signage. We select the placement points and the number of bait stations according to a study and the extent of the problem.
Capture Traps for Mouse Control
For indoor areas of buildings, our company applies the method of mechanical multiple-capture traps. These are traps with an adhesive surface and are placed at rodent passage points. If the problem is very intense, they should also be combined with bait stations.
Mice | General Information
Mice live in all parts of the world.
A mouse should not be confused with a rat. The mouse’s head is pointed, with large eyes, and its legs are proportional to its body.
Mice have excellent reproductive characteristics. At 35 days of life, they mature and carry embryos for 18 to 21 days. If the female miscarries, she can become pregnant again within 48 hours.
Newborn mice are small, blind, pink, and hairless. After about three weeks, they are fully covered with fur, make short trips from their nests, and feed on solid food. Mice usually live 15 – 18 months. Mice have poor eyesight and color blindness, but their sense of smell, taste, hearing, and touch are highly developed. They are usually active after dusk, once the environment has become quiet. When undisturbed, they search for food at any time during the day or night. Some of their favorite shelters are underground, in the floors of buildings, and in other enclosed areas of buildings that can be used as nests.
Mice usually destroy and contaminate food in homes. They are considered responsible for much of the damage caused in houses and farmhouses.
Pathogenic microorganisms can be transmitted directly to humans through a mouse bite, or from rodents to parasites such as fleas, ticks, lice, etc., which bite humans and mice, or through contamination of food with their feces and urine.
Health Protection
In the event that a problem is detected, the application of rodent control is necessary, because there may be harmful effects on human health as well as consequences for businesses. Rodent species contaminate with microbes, such as salmonella, transmit diseases, such as the highly dangerous Icteric Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease), and contaminate food and other goods.
In addition, they are responsible for damage to facilities, even causing fires.
Rodent Treatment
It is carried out using safe methods, with closed-type bait stations placed in zones that have been mapped within the premises, with special signage and according to the needs of each area. Approved rodenticidal baits are placed inside the bait stations, consisting of anticoagulant substances of subacute toxicity that act on the blood, specifically on the prothrombin cycle.
Special attention is required when implementing a control program for commensal rodents in food industries, where only presence-monitoring measures are taken inside warehouses and production areas, such as mechanical multiple-capture traps or non-toxic baits, as the use of anticoagulants is not permitted.
Mice – General Information
Rattus norvegicus
This species gives birth to 8-12 offspring per litter, which are capable of fertilization after 2 to 3 months, often even earlier. On average, the female gives birth 7 times per year, with a lifespan that can exceed 12 months.
It has a large, robust body, with brownish fur, slightly black on the upper part and gray to yellowish-white on the lower part. The average body weight for adults is 300 grams, and its body length ranges from 19 to 25cm. In general, it moves within a radius of 15-30m from the nest.
Rattus rattus
This species gives birth to 6-10 offspring per litter, with a “maturation” period similar to that of R. norvegicus. The female gives birth 6 times per year, and the lifespan of the species is similar to that of R. norvegicus.
It has a smaller body than R. norvegicus, with gray to black fur. The average body weight of an adult is 200 grams, and the body length is 15-22cm. It has a large activity radius, ranging from 15-30m from the nest.

Mus Musculus
It gives birth to 5-6 offspring per litter, with a “maturation” period of 1 to 2 months. The female gives birth 8 times per year, and the lifespan of this species is 9-12 months. It has a thin and small body, with light brown to light gray fur. The average body weight is 15 grams, and the body length is 6-9cm. It has a small and localized activity radius, ranging from 3-6m from the nest.
